The other night I was watching Women of Grace on the EWTN network, hosted by Johnnette Benkovic. Her two guests, Father Michael Gaitley and Susan Tassone, were speaking about Purgatory and something I’d never heard of, which Saint Thomas Aquinas calls accidental glory. Here is a passage directly from Ms. Tassone’s website:
If the deceased have no further need for purification, they may be drawn more deeply into the intimacy of God’s love by means of these prayers (St. Thomas Aquinas calls this “accidental glory.”) They themselves may increase in their own intercessory power as they “watch over us, the living” (Hebrews 12:1). The Fatima Message
In 1917, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to three shepherd children near Fatima, Portugal between the months of May – October. She gave these children a message for the world, warning that if people did not reform their lives, God would punish them by means of sufferings, including wars. She also asked them if they wished to offer themselves to God, which would mean enduring much suffering that He may send them as an act of reparation for the sins of mankind and the conversion of sinners. She consoled them by telling them that the grace of God would be their comfort. The children willingly accepted this suffering. Our Lady went on to tell them to pray the Rosary every day to obtain peace for the world and an end to the war.

There is one prayer request this week in the burgundy font below. Please keep this person’s father in your prayers. One way to pray for a sick person is to offer up your own sufferings, physical or emotional, for that person. There is so much power in redemptive suffering and offering sacrifices. I don’t think any of us do that enough and yet it’s what Jesus did when he died on the Cross to save us from our sins. Also, keep in mind that Our Lady asked for more prayers, penance and sacrifices when she spoke to the children of Fatima.

A year ago this month I wrote a post called Month of the Holy Rosary and I’ve decided to rerun it again. I don’t think enough people are aware of the fact that October is the month of the Holy Rosary. I seem to remember first finding out about this through the EWTN network and I’ve actually linked to it in my post below.

A few nights ago I found a little holy card in my nightstand drawer that I’d almost forgotten about with a picture of the Holy Family on the front, and a prayer for family consecration on the back. (The photo to the left shows the front of the card; the photo below shows the prayer on the back.) I hadn’t laid eyes on it in a while, as it had sort of gotten buried amidst the other things in my drawer. My mother had given me the prayer card years and years ago when I was probably too young to even read. But I held onto it all this time, along with my other holy cards that I used to keep with my childhood collection of books that my mom and I called God books.

The Seven Sorrows of Mary is a form of meditation and prayer in which we take part in the sorrows of the life of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Our Lady grants seven graces to the souls who honor her daily by saying the “Hail Mary” seven times and meditating on her tears and dolors (also called sorrows.) This devotion was passed on by Saint Bridget.
As you know, my sister, Amy, and her husband were in a terrible car accident on June 19th of this year. Amy has been in the recovery phase but life has been difficult for her these days. She has physical pains from her injuries and her mind is restless. She wants to get back to work. She is still not able to return to her job and is using a wheelchair to get around until she graduates to crutches. It seems as if it’s one challenge after another for her.

The message of Fatima is perceived by many as to be even more important in our present day and time than it was back in 1917!
In 1916, an angel appeared to three shepherd children of Fatima to prepare them for six apparitions of Our Lady which would occur in 1917; May 13th – October 13th of that year is when Our Lady appeared. This past January I wrote a couple of posts about the Fatima story which you can read here (Part One) and here (Part Two).
