UPDATE: March 2, 2013 – Please click here to read the latest on the topic of Garabandal.
The Garabandal Warning is part of a message from 1961 that Our Lady gave four young girls: Conchita Gonzalez (12), Mari Loli Mazon (12), Jacinta Gonzalez (12) and Mari Cruz Gonzalez (11) in a small mountain village of northern Spain called San Sebastian de Garabandal. The Garabandal Warning was the first part of the message; the second two parts were the Miracle and the Chastisement.
Our Lady appeared to these four girls under the title of Our Lady of Mount Carmel and she was accompanied by Saint Michael the Archangel. The visions lasted until the year 1965 and they were accompanied by extraordinary phenomena which included the girls falling into states of ecstasy. These visions numbered in the thousands and attracted huge crowds. Much of the phenomena was captured on film and in photos and there were thousands of witnesses.
Garabandal Warning Message Revealed on October 18, 1961
This is the message the girls revealed on October 18, 1961:
“We must make many sacrifices, perform much penance, and visit the Blessed Sacrament frequently. But first, we must lead good lives. If we do not, a chastisement will befall us. The cup is already filling up, and if we do not change, a very great chastisement will come upon us.”
Four years later, on June 18, 1965, this message was followed by a second and final message from Our Lady that was delivered by Saint Michael to Conchita. It said:
“As my message of October 18 has not been complied with and has not been made known to the world, I am advising you that this is the last one. Before, the cup was filling up. Now it is flowing over. Many cardinals, many bishops and many priests are on the road to perdition and are taking many souls with them. Less and less importance is being given to the Eucharist. You should turn the wrath of God away from yourselves by your efforts. If you ask His forgiveness with sincere hearts, He will pardon you. I, your mother, through the intercession of Saint Michael the Archangel, ask you to amend your lives. You are now receiving the last warnings. I love you very much and do not want your condemnation. Pray to us with sincerity and we will grant your requests. You should make more sacrifices. Think about the passion of Jesus.”
Our Lady appeared to Conchita one last time on November 13, 1965; that was the final apparition.
Garabandal Warning and Great Supernatural Events
These are the great supernatural events predicted in relation to the Garabandal Warning: the Warning, Miracle and Chastisement. The Warning will occur within twelve months of the Miracle and its purpose will be to “correct the conscience of the world” in preparation for that Miracle. It will first be seen in the sky and then everyone on earth will feel it interiorly; no one will escape it. Though it will be of short duration, it will also be extremely painful because everyone will see the wrong they have done and the good they have failed to do.
The Miracle will occur at a grove of pine trees on a bluff overlooking Garabandal. Conchita knows the date that this Miracle will take place and she will announce it eight days in advance. Everyone who is in the village or on the surrounding mountains will see it. The sick that are present will be cured, sinners will be converted and the unbelievers will believe. This Miracle will be the greatest Miracle that Jesus will have ever performed for the world. And as a result of this Miracle, Russia and other countries will be converted. After the Miracle a supernatural sign will remain at the site until the end of time.
If the world does not change after the Warning and the Miracle, then the Chastisement will come.
Garabandal Warning and the Church’s Position
Garabandal is not yet officially recognized by the Church; that can’t happen until after the Miracle takes place. But Rome has always taken these events seriously. There were two occasions on which Conchita was summoned to the Vatican for interrogation: in 1966 by Cardinal Ottaviani, Prefect of the Holy Office, and in 1968 by Cardinal Seper, Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. In both cases she made a favorable impression. Also, it is a known fact that Pope Paul VI encouraged the spread of the messages and events. And it appears that Blessed Pope John Paul II was also in favor of the propagation of the Garabandal messages.
Garabandal Warning and Today’s World
In 1961, Our Lady said at Garabandal that “the cup was filling up.” And four years later she said that it was “flowing over.” One can’t help but wonder if that much could happen over the course of four years where that leaves us today, more than forty years later. There are horrific moral corruptions in today’s world that didn’t even exist (at least not openly) in the 1960s. We are now at the point where virtually every area of our society has been corrupted to one degree or another. The Church is afflicted by scandal, division and disobedience (with many unfaithful Catholics showing total disregard for magisterial teaching.) 70% of Catholics today no longer believe in the Real Presence of Jesus in the Holy Eucharist, and instead treat it as a mere symbol. The Church is in a state of deterioration and in some European countries the Catholic faith is even on the brink of extinction.
There is so much more to say about the Garabandal Warning and I can’t possibly fit it all into this post. I will continue where I left off with a Part Two at some point in the near future.
